To avoid microcoagulation, the EDTA tube should be mixed by inverting 8-10 times immediately after the blood sample has been taken.

Note: EDTA salts (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) are used to anticoagulate whole blood in haematological examinations, as the cellular components of the blood are particularly well preserved by EDTA.
